In terms of core mechanics, Gollum darts back and forth between platforming and stealth sections. Most levels follow the formula of requiring you to utilise a combination of the two to accomplish a goal or, more often, reach a specific part of the map. With the timeline, central plot and setting firmly established, we can finally whip out our magnifying glasses and take a deep look at the gameplay. In an effort to keep any story spoilers to an absolute minimum, I’ll leave the summary there. The first couple of in-game chapters are told in the form of a flashback, forcibly extracted from our protagonist at the hands of none other than Gandalf the Grey, before fully re-joining the current events of the present.

Roughly occurring adjacent to early events within The Fellowship of the Ring book, Gollum’s journey sees him break the shackles of his enslavement within the pits of Barad-dur, before absconding to the depths of Cirith Ungol’s mountainous tunnels and beyond. The Lord of the Rings: Gollum has you assume the role of the titular character on a quest to retrieve his beloved “Precious”, the One Ring, after it was taken from his cave by the Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins.

Before I get into the laundry list of issues plaguing this release, allow me to first set the stage for what we’re looking at here.
